McAfee’s Knob Appalachian Trail is a hike on many people’s bucket lists. We live an hour away from many world renowned hikes on the Appalachian trail, and I can’t believe we haven’t enjoyed it more. We got up at 5am to reach the trail so we could hike the sunrise.
We opted to take the harder Appalachian route up to the Knob, it was 8 miles of strenuous uphill but so much fun. When we got to the top the fog was lifting and the sun was dancing along the deep green mountains of Virginia and West Virginia. It was a clear day and we could see for miles in all directions.
There’s something about hiking to mountain tops that washes away my cares and worries. Those miles climbing to the top become a simple, all-absorbing goal that fills me with satisfaction and gratitude. Reaching the top is the best reward for my soul, and the miles down prepare me for the tasks ahead.
Maybe all those analogies about life being like climbing a mountain aren’t too far off. It makes me ponder on my attitude when I am climbing my figurative “mountains” in life. Am I happily putting one foot in front of the other knowing that the climb is worth it? Do I allow myself time to stop and breathe to replenish my strength? Do I mentally encourage myself when I see I still have miles left until the finish line?
Leave it to me to take a simple hike and turn it into something a little deeper than you were looking for 😉
Is hiking something you enjoy? What’s on your bucket list to hike?
